What to do with a spare bit of lawn? Plans are in the works to develop a corner of our church gardens into a Community Garden Allotment that will offer a programme for disaffected young people, and provide fresh produce to the Miner's Lamp Café in the Village Life Centre once it is built.
The allotment is a working partnership with the LEA's behavioural support unit at the Springwell Centre, Groundworks Dearne Valley, Barnsley Council and St. Mary Magdalene Church. The initial objective is to provide a project site for Key Stage 3 young people who are unable to access mainstream education. As the project develops, it will be expanded to include other members of the community.
However, there is still a lot of development work to be done before the project is launched. We are still in the process of designing the allotment, developing a business plan and applying for funding.
Watch this space to see how the project unfolds and how you can support it.
